This position can be a Director & Actuary or a Director & Assistant Actuary depending on the skills and experience of the candidate.

This position leads an Actuarial team that supports the Inland Marine, Programs, and Multinational lines within Middle and Large Commercial.  These lines write a combined $400M in premium.  The Hartford is determined to beat the competition and has a strong desire to expand the breadth and depth of its Commercial Property and Programs capabilities, becoming a stronger risk player in the marketplace.  We are improving our profitability using continuous innovation and a deep understanding of the business. The line has support and visibility across the enterprise.

This position is responsible for leading a team of four (4).  It is imperative to establish strong relationships with the business partners, build credibility, and proactively identify areas to improve the business results. 

Responsibilities:

Specifically, the individual in this role will:

  • Lead the Marine, Programs, and Multinational teams in creating rate indications, trends, and loss ratio forecasts on a regular basis; incorporate insights into our pricing tools.
  • Own the Marine benchmark model and coordinate updates with Product, Underwriting and the field organization. Partner with the AIM and AIS teams to enhance data, the benchmark model, and other tools.
  • Ensure that the team executes the Marine rate filings which are a key component to improving results.  Drive efficiencies in the rate filing processes to maximize time for the analytical work related to filing decisions.
  • Work closely with team members to understand how various perils, including CAT, impact the book of business.
  • Understand the details and nuances of our Marine, Programs, and Multinational books. Drive continued action for profit improvement and proactively identify areas of opportunity for premium growth. 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 4 years of P&C insurance experience.  Property specific experience a plus.
  • FCAS or career ACAS strongly preferred. Similar experience (e.g. FSA/ASA) will be considered.
  • Prior management experience is strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to prioritize work efforts and operating plans to achieve business goals and objectives.
  • Proven track record of challenging existing processes, influencing others and driving processes to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey technical results to our business partners and influence decisions.
  • Team player with strong collaboration skills and ability to build trusting, effective partnerships.

Location:

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement.  Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).   Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. 

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$129,360 - $217,080

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
