National Accounts is a segment within Middle and Large Commercial (MLC) that writes loss sensitive large commercial accounts that are individually priced, often with tailored policy coverages across Workers’ Compensation, Commercial Auto, and General Liability.
This position is a key role within the Actuarial Reserving department, supporting the National Accounts segment. The position is primarily responsible for the semi-annual reserve review process, as well as ongoing claim monitoring and analytics. In addition, the role will be involved with various cross-team and individual projects, analysis of trends and emerging issues, and exploration of new reserving techniques and analytical tools. The position will partner with various business units to be a leading source of knowledge on National Accounts, including Workers’ Compensation, Commercial Auto, and General Liability experience and trends in comparison to other segments. The individual should have strong technical and analytical skills, be able to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences, and be able to influence business partners.
Responsibilities
- Lead semi-annual reserve reviews and support ongoing monitoring for National Accounts
- Develop new analytic tools and enhance current tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of reserve reviews and to deliver improved insights to business partners
- Become an expert regarding emerging internal & external trends in LOB loss experience, changes within claims operations, and underwriting trends
- Conduct sophisticated actuarial analyses and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to business partners
- Drive and enhance the partnership between Actuarial, Claims, and the business functions
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3-5+ years’ experience in insurance or related industry.
- Progress towards ACAS/FCAS or ASA/FSA preferred, but not required. We will consider filling this role as part of our actuarial student program for a qualified candidate meeting requirements for entry into the program.
- Very strong technical, analytical and data skills; Excel required and experience with SQL, R and/or Python preferred.
- Experience working independently as well as part of a team.
- Self-motivation, creativity, time-management, project-management, and customer-management skills will be beneficial in this role.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities.

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
