About the role:

This role will oversee the financial reporting and reinsurance function for Symetra's Retirement Actuarial Group. This person will prepare materials for and present at the company's quarterly business results meeting with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team. Reporting to the Retirement Actuarial lead SVP, the VP Actuary is a member of the company's management team and will play an important leadership role as the company grows, working toward continued operational excellence within the reporting function and working with leaders on new reinsurance programs and new regulations with a mind towards the financial health of the company. This person will lead the production, analysis, and documentation of actuarial financial reporting, while also playing a fundamental role in profitability analysis, financial planning, and reinsurance strategy. The successful candidate will also be responsible for managing internal and external actuarial support.

What you will do
  • Leads the actuarial valuation teams for the retirement division based on US GAAP and US Statutory
  • Oversight and review of the asset/liability modeling development and output for any principles-based reserving for US Statutory and any Market Risk Benefits
  • Monthly financial results analysis and review and ownership over explaining actual-to-plan variances
  • Preparation of the division's financial and business plan
  • Management related duties including reviewing work, developing employees, and leading teams
  • Ensure proper model governance and controls over the financial reporting processes
  • Prioritizes modeling enhancements and updates. Directs strategy on model optimization and reporting framework.
  • Provides input on potential future annuity reinsurance transactions, including offshore agreements.
  • Performs analysis of existing reinsurance agreements to assess the financial viability of maintaining the agreements in place and optimize the terms of the agreements. Makes recommendations to management accordingly based on the results of this work. Works with reinsurers and internal stakeholders to renegotiate reinsurance agreements as needed. Project-related work including deal analysis and implementation of new reinsurance deals.
  • Will help establish and run operational aspects of financial reporting including reinsurance for the retirement division. Ensures that RD administrative processes are consistent with industry best practices as well as with reinsurance contract terms.
  • Would be the lead contact on reinsurance status updates and report outs as well as any audits around reinsurance, both internal and external.
  • Will manage a team of 12+ actuaries doing financial reporting work. Will report to Symetra Life Insurance Company's SVP Sr Actuary Retirement Division and will work closely with SFC's SVP Chief Actuary.
  • Approximately 40% of time spent on recurring duties, 20% on project related work, and 40% management related duties including reviewing work, developing employees, and leading teams

Compensation

Salary Range: $225,000 - $250,000 plus eligibility for annual bonus programs

Who you are
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with strong quantitative background including college level Mathematics
  • 10+ years of insurance related actuarial experience
  • 2+ years of direct experience with reinsurance
  • FSA required
  • Must have annuities experience.
  • Fixed Indexed Annuity experience required as well as extensive knowledge of US GAAP FAS 133 and US Statutory Actuarial Guideline 33/35. Registered Indexed Annuity Experience Preferred.
  • Exceptional technical and computer skills, including use of complex spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and data management tools
  • Strong aptitude to manage a complex set of simultaneous projects and initiatives to successful outcomes
  • Proven ability to present technical information to large audiences
  • Professional presence with polished and well-developed oral/written communication, interpersonal and team skills
  • Broad expertise in a variety of company, industry, and regulatory actuarial issues
  • Expressed commitment to professional development
  • Excellent and highly effective communication skills. Communicates and presents often to executive management.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of knowledge of actuarial concepts and assumptions used for modeling, pricing, and/or financial reporting.
  • Proven ability to lead, empower and manage major actuarial functions and large teams remotely and across varying time zones.
  • Ability to solve complex actuarial problems independently in a multi-dimensional context and with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Exercises good judgement and strong process organization.
  • Proactive, inquisitive, and able to identify any gaps then drive to fill them.
  • Demonstrated mastery of insurance/products and very knowledgeable on industry info. Recognized as an internal expert in a variety of company, industry, and regulatory actuarial issues.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, plan, and manage complex projects.
  • Focus on process improvement with a modernization lens. Can identify which processes would benefit from automation and work with the right people and tools to accomplish this.
