Position Summary

The Qualified Actuary is part of the Valuation Center of Excellence in Enterprise Actuarial Services, a service-oriented function focusing on actuarial valuation and analysis needs. This role is responsible for certifying that the Principle Based Reserving (PBR) valuation is accurate and producing documentation on the valuation that is filed with the States.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

1. Lead the PBR quarterly valuation
  • Direct a cross-functional team of associates to produce the VM-20 (Individual Life PBR) and VM-21 (Variable Annuities) valuation on a quarterly basis.
  • Interpret the regulation and provide guidance and leadership for implementation and enhancement of the valuation system model.
  • Review and approve model enhancements.


2. Responsible for leading and delivering the annual PBR Reporting
  • Direct a cross-functional team of associates to produce and file the annual PBR report.
  • Present the Qualified Actuary report to governance committee(s) and Senior Management
  • Respond to regulator inquiries related to PRB and proactively communicate changes that may require approval.


3. Advance actuarial governance and standards of practice
  • Serve on actuarial governance group(s) to provide oversight in accordance with our ERM policies and framework.
  • Monitor PBR valuation standards and guidelines to ensure enterprise and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee assumption-setting for PBR.
  • Foster a culture of excellence in financial reporting, controls, and financial analysis.


4. Support Securian's business strategy
  • Support new product development and pricing.
  • Provide insights on financial impact of management actions.
  • Demonstrate leadership through educating and mentoring peers and teammates on PBR initiatives, updated regulation, and financial results.

2. FSA, ASA or MAAA with 3 years of responsible actuarial experience

3. Understanding of statutory valuation regulations
4. Ability and desire to collaborate across several teams and functions
5. Strong leadership skills, including communication and problem-solving

If you're in a commutable distance (90 minutes) you'll join us 2-3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules. When working in our offices at least two days per week isn't feasible (vacations, illness, travel, etc.), an eight day per month standard is an option.

Physical job requirements:
  • Ability to utilize keyboard, mouse and computer for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
