Job Description
We are seeking an SVP, Head of Reserving – North America to head up Sompo International’s North American Insurance and Global Reinsurance reserving teams. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, qualified actuary who will liaise and partner closely with the North American Insurance and Global Reinsurance businesses across all lines, which includes Property, Professional Lines, General Liability, Healthcare, Surety, Agriculture, Political Risk, Marine, Energy and Aviation.
The SVP, Head of Reserving, North America, will report to the Group Chief Reserving Actuary. The role will be supported by dedicated reserving teams based in New York and Zurich and will also benefit from access to shared resources from across the Group reserving team.
The position will be based in New York City.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the quarterly reserving analysis for the North American Insurance and Global Reinsurance Segments.
- Present quarterly results to the senior management and underwriting teams in these Segments.
- Manage the North American Insurance and Global Reinsurance Reserving teams.
- Work with the Group Chief Reserving Actuary to establish management best estimate recommendations for the North American Insurance and Global Reinsurance segments.
- Assist in the development and implementation of frameworks aimed at improving the efficiency of existing processes. This may include contributing to cross-function projects focused on data quality, data flows, and early close, accelerating the completion time for the quarterly ACE analysis.
- Manage and take responsibility for the training and professional development of supporting staff, including the setting and monitoring of individuals’ objectives. In addition, where requested, will be responsible for engaging and supervising external consultants.
- Develop relationships with the regional Pricing, Risk, Claims, Finance, and Financial Planning and Analysis teams and leverage these relationships to enhance an understanding of Sompo International’s business and processes.
- Build relationships with senior management within the Segments with the goal of becoming a trusted advisor.
- Lead special projects that allow for a deeper understanding of trends and emerging risks within the North American Insurance and Global Reinsurance portfolios.
- Leverage the ACE analysis to provide support to the Group Chief Reserving Actuary in the annual planning process, as required.
- Keep abreast of changes in regulatory requirements and market developments that may impact Sompo International’s North American Insurance and Global Reinsurance businesses.
- To support other special projects as required by the business.
SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
- FIA or FCAS with at least 15-20 years of post-qualification experience, preferably in a senior reserving role.
- A background in (Re)Insurance is required, including detailed knowledge of at least some of the lines of business referred to above.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills, including a proven ability to build relationships with senior management and underwriting teams and to effectively communicate to senior management and board-level audience.
- The candidate must be well-organised, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and consistently meet deadlines without compromising quality.
- Proven success record in leading high performing teams and achieving results through others.
- Strong IT skills are required, including proficiency with the usual MS Office Products and some programming experience (eg. SQL) would be beneficial.
Salary Range: $215,000 - $275,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
