Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

$114,700.00 - $189,300.00

What Is the Opportunity?

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain both an enterprise-wide and an external perspective. Corporate Actuarial works across the enterprise to ensure that Travelers' carried reserves are reasonable. It requires close working relationships with business unit actuaries as well as corporate finance across the enterprise. Additionally, Corporate Actuarial serves as the actuarial point of contact to external organizations such as auditors, state regulators, the IRS, and rating agencies, as well as providing information to Senior Management on a regular and ad hoc basis. The position has a contributing role in producing the reserve ranges in the Actuarial Opinion Summaries and Actuarial Reports.What Will You Do?

This position will play a key role in producing the Statement of Actuarial Opinion and participates in the Actuarial Opinion Summary and Actuarial Report Processes. Other responsibilities include reserve range work, various financial reporting activities and independent testing of reserves. You will have the opportunity to work with both our St Paul and Hartford teams giving you exposure to a wealth of experience in data management, financial reporting, and reserving practices. The position will also be involved in quarter end work for the Quarterly Reserve Meetings, Reserve Considerations, and 10Q /10K reports. There is also a variety of project work supporting the Corporate Chief Actuary.

Participating in producing the 10K and 10Q will give you further insight into how Travelers management thinks about risk. Exposure to the enterprise wide view and corporate management is a unique aspect of this position and helps build your business acumen. You will be attending and consolidating exhibits from the Quarterly Reserve Meetings where you will see how the Chief Actuaries present their indications to the CFO and his team. Observing the CFO's questions and the Chief Actuaries' responses will provide insight into how decisions are arrived at to determine Management's Best Estimate.

This position provides expertise to enterprise-wide initiatives by bringing broad business and analytics perspective to the organization to inform decisions. Builds and maintains relationships with partners across the enterprise. Strategic and critical thinking, a creative approach to quantitative analysis, attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to influence are critical skills in this job. Demonstrated solid actuarial analysis and reporting skills. General understanding of actuarial and other insurance related models (i.e. Reserving, ROE and RBC models). General understanding of financial reporting, both GAAP and Statutory, as well as income statements and balance sheets.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • College degree in STEM related field.
  • Associate Actuarial Credential preferred.
  • Strong PC skills (MS Office) and programming skills (eg. SQL, SAS).
  • 5+ years of quantitative analysis experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of insurance products and industry.
  • Demonstrated ability in actuarial and quantitative analysis and statistical concepts.
  • Management experience preferred.

  • Proficient in Leading Self, exhibiting decisiveness and self-awareness while also effectively managing ambiguity.

  • Has an in-depth understanding and knowledge of a few key business drivers and disciplines such as: underwriting, products, reinsurance, distribution, sales, operations, risk control, claim, and financials.
  • Able to effectively utilize this business knowledge in developing analytic solutions.
  • Has a general perspective of certain areas of the industry and developing trends such as: technology, analytic methodology, products and performance of competitors.
  • Begins to be familiar with other key business drivers and discipline areas as well.

  • Proactively build and own professional business relationships across the BI&AA community across the Enterprise.

What is a Must Have?
  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 3 years of experience in quantitative analysis required.
