We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join Optum Advisory as the Senior Director of Actuarial Health Intelligence. As the Senior Director, you will be responsible for overseeing our Actuarial Health Intelligence data warehouse and analytics capability. In this role, you will drive the strategic direction of our actuarial analytics product offerings which leverage data-driven insights to support clinical decision-making and optimize financial performance for our Optum Advisory customers. Additionally, you will be responsible for developing and growing commercial offerings that leverage Optum's extensive access to various data stores.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Actuarial Data Warehouse Management:
    • Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of the Actuarial Health Intelligence data warehouse, ensuring data quality, accuracy, and integrity
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement improvements in internal and client data collection, conformance, storage, and retrieval processes
    • Develop and enforce data governance policies and procedures to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Analytics Capability Development:
    • Lead the development and implementation of advanced analytics models and methodologies to analyze actuarial data and generate actionable insights
    • Drive the integration of predictive modeling, machine learning, and other advanced analytical techniques to enhance risk assessment, pricing strategies, and underwriting processes
    • Identify opportunities to leverage data analytics to optimize population health management, member and provider engagement, and health plan financial performance
  • Product Strategy:
    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop commercial offerings that capitalize on Optum's intelligence and benchmark data and build on existing technology platforms, including StepWise, Databricks, Snowflake, PowerBI, Azure Healthcare Cloud
    • Identify market opportunities and conduct competitive analysis to inform product development and positioning
    • Drive the development and implementation of product roadmaps, pricing strategies, and go-to-market plans
    • Collaborate with actuarial teams to analyze claims experience, utilization patterns, and cost trends to inform pricing, product development, and financial planning
    • Oversee the production and delivery of business intelligence offerings using warehouse data
  • Team Leadership and Management:
    • Recruit, develop, and manage a high-performing team of data engineers, data scientists, actuaries, and analytics experts, providing guidance, coaching, and mentoring
    • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous learning
    • Establish performance metrics and goals for the team, ensuring adherence to project timelines and deliverables
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including executive leadership, finance, underwriting, and product development teams, to align actuarial strategies with business objectives
    • Represent the actuarial function in cross-functional initiatives and external engagements, providing subject matter expertise and strategic guidance
    • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners, such as actuaries, consultants, and vendors, to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of actuarial experience focus on health insurance, analytics, and data warehousing
  • 7+ years of analytical and problem-solving skills, with expertise in data manipulation, statistical modeling, and predictive analytics
  • 5+ years of experience leading and managing actuarial teams, data scientists, or analytics teams, with a track record of delivering high-quality results
  • Proven excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex actuarial concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience in product strategy and development within the healthcare industry
  • Proficiency in actuarial software (e.g., SAS, SQL, Python) and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
