Job Opportunity: 

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our globally focused Actuarial team. We are looking for an individual with excellent problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, and the technical know-how to design, develop, and implement the necessary data storage, automation, and integration solutions to support actuarial and underwriting analysis. This position will be the perfect fit for an individual who is intellectually curious, self-motivated and a collaborative team member.

The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, monitoring, and extending our actuarial data warehouse and analytics architecture to meet the team’s business analysis and reporting needs. The design and development focus includes but is not limited to Extraction Transformation Layer (ETL) frameworks, metadata management, data integration, master data definition and data quality, data auditing and profiling, and business intelligence reporting solutions. Additionally, this role will serve as both the architect and administrator of our actuarial data infrastructure, inclusive of all actuarial servers and database developments.

We are focused on enabling self-service data analysis for ease of reporting and analytics visualization while focusing on data accessibility, efficiency, governance, performance, and integrity. This team member will work with various business partners to map the technical vision for data in the actuarial data warehouse employing Azure, APIs, and SQL server.  Additionally, they will be responsible for reviewing, analyzing, modifying, and creating ETLs, utilizing SQL, CD/CI pipelines, DevOps, testing, debugging, integration, and implementation processes.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • In-depth analysis of existing data load, analytics, and visualization code to ensure accuracy of data flow and resolution of anomalies.
  • Provisioning workflows, data pipelines, extracts, ETL and integrations using API’s, JSON, XLS and other sources to integrate with internal data stores and systems.
  • Coordinate and implement the integration of various data sources to a central repository through sound testing, documentation, and execution of strategy.
  • Perform data validations and reconciliations between various sources and reports with precision and attention to detail to ensure deliverables are accurate and effective .
  • Debug and troubleshoot data quality problems using SQL tools.
  • Provide technical support to actuaries and underwriters using the combination of tools needed to best complete each task (e.g. SQL, Excel, VBA).
  • Oversight and administration of actuarial data infrastructure including server performance and database monitoring.
  • The role will play a significant part in augmenting the data platform as we transition to an Azure based data platform leveraging all the latest tools available anchoring on Azure resources.

 Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Analytics, Computer Science or related field.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated professional data engineering experience with specialization in data modeling and business intelligence, insurance industry preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency of SQL required, SQL database management preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure with a concentration in ETL processing via Data Factory required.
  • Experience with PowerBI, Python, R programming preferred.
  • Proficient in TSQL procedural coding, analysis, DML and DDL scripting.
  • Proficient in data transformation, ETL methodology, and data warehousing.
  • Demonstrated understanding of API development as it pertains to data integration efforts.
  • Familiarity with data modelling and experience working within complex data environments.
  • Experience defining and implementing a global data catalog / data dictionary for end user reference.
  • Proven track record of collaboration across functions delivering quality results in an efficient manner.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and on teams .
  • Strong desire to learn from and share knowledge with teammates.
  • Effective time management, with the ability to juggle multiple projects at the same time.
