Overview of the Position

This position supports pricing for the Group Benefits Disability (Long-Term and Short-Term Disability) products for employer groups with greater than 1,000 employees. The candidate will have the opportunity to assist in pricing of nonstandard cases, special projects, setting assumption levels, profitability monitoring, competitive analysis, and underwriting support. We are looking for an individual with expertise in Group Disability products such as Group Long-Term Disability (LTD), Short-Term Disability (STD), and related insurance coverages for employer groups to support pricing and analytics. Additionally, this role will have interactions with Underwriting, Sales, Product, Senior Management, Information Technology, and Valuation.

  • Support various Disability business lines and assist on case pricing and rate adequacy.

  • Reinforce adaptability, flexibility, ability to manage and prioritize dynamic workflow.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Disability LTD and STD Pricing Target and Assumption review process including manual trends, historic claim trends, interest rates, expenses, reserves, and assumption picks.
  • Support large case pricing with Underwriting and Sales.
  • Work with our Underwriting business partners to price non-standard requests.
  • Supporting ad-hoc pricing requests for other products like Reserve Buyouts, administrative only STD, Leave Management, Paid Family and Medical Leave, Par, and Statutory Disability.
  • Learn the LTD reserve process and become a SME for running various custom reserves as needed.
  • Partner with external partners to understand STD and LTD Competitiveness.
  • Help maintain up-to-date pricing tools to support UW risk assessment.
  • Make enhancements to existing processes to improve efficiency and improve pricing accuracy.
  • Covid-19 pricing strategy for long-term and short-term disability - review pricing implications and pricing trends from the changing Covid-19 environment.
  • Supporting Compliance filings and single case filings.
  • Migration/enhancement of disability pricing tools.

Experience & Skills

  • Undergraduate degree with a major in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics, or related field of study.
  • Progress towards actuarial designation ASA/FSA preferred, but not required. This role can be part of our Actuarial Leadership Development Program for a qualified candidate meeting requirements for entry into he program. The Actuarial Leadership Development Program provides ultimate support and rewards for passing actuarial exams.
  • 2+ years of experience in an actuarial or related function
  • Experience assessing risk and knowledge of group pricing and rating techniques preferred.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills, including strong Excel/VBA skills.
  • Database experience with R or other similar programming language preferred.
  • Proven experience managing projects, influencing, and driving results to both actuarial and non-actuarial audiences.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and general business management skills are imperative.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$70,000 - $110,000
