Overview of Position

This position is focused on reserving and trend analysis supporting primarily Commercial Auto and Commercial Property lines across Small and Middle Market.  It is a strong individual contributor role, which is responsible for increasing efficiency and effectiveness within Actuarial Reserving.  The role will also provide support to innovate and advance our key reserving initiatives.

Commercial Property is a short tailed line where the focus is on communicating trends in the emerged losses and supporting recommendations for booking each month.  Commercial Auto is a moderately long developing line where large losses and attorney involvement can affect the results of the line. 

The Specialist will have the opportunity to present analyses to business partners and senior leaders across actuarial reserving, actuarial pricing, product, and claims.  The results of the team’s work in analyzing the reserves not only has a financial impact to the company, but is also a major component in our business partners’ work in pricing our commercial auto and property products.

Opportunities:

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of reserving techniques
  • Analyze the impact of current events on the reserve analysis, such as the continued impacts of Covid restrictions on Property lines
  • Strengthen communication skills from presenting and communicating results to business partners
  • Utilize and improve R and SQL skills to compile and report out data
  • Work in cross-line and cross-functional working groups on various projects
  • Develop analytics skills to detect and measure emerging trends in property and auto experience
  • Utilize modeled expectations for large loss emergence for Property

Major responsibilities of this role include:

  • Complete and present quarterly reserve reviews
  • Provide insight and commentary for drivers of the monthly Actual versus Expected reporting
  • Complete trend analyses of loss experience to answer questions from business partners, examining attributes like industry, peril, injury type and coverage
  • Leverage R to streamline diagnostic reporting and analysis
  • Complete annual analyses and reports such as time curve updates for booking and actuarial report support
  • Assist in development of advanced analytical models to improve analysis, including large loss modeling
  • Assist with the communication of reserve results to business partners and senior management
  • Support the creation of key metrics of interest to Reserving and the segment, such as litigation rate, settlement rate, case reserve adequacy, trends by geography, etc.

Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum 3-5+ years of experience in an actuarial role or similar discipline.
  • Near or recent ACAS or individuals with actuarial reserving experience not pursuing exams preferred.
  • Very strong technical, analytical and data skills; Excel required and experience with SQL, R, ResQ and TM1 preferred.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented with the ability to manage time effectively in an environment with multiple priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds, and to influence business partners to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Proactive individual, with demonstrated creativity and innovation, who can drive a process to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$90,000 - $149,000
