The Director, Actuarial Services is primarily responsible for providing analytic capacity and insight in support of E&I's medical claims expense reserving process. In this role the individual will analyze medical cost data to identify and interpret relevant emerging cost patterns/trends and coordinate with the reserving team to ensure appropriate consideration in monthly claim reserves, and to design/build/maintain analytic tools and capabilities in support of those efforts. This role requires solid technical data management and data analysis skills, solid problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.

This role is located in Minnetonka, MN. However, if you are located outside of Minnetonka, MN, you will enjoy the flexibility to work remotely* from anywhere within the U.S.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design/develop/maintain medical cost tools and reporting to monitor and identify relevant monthly medical cost changes, anomalies, impacts of claims operational changes, etc. that might impact the appropriate setting of medical claim reserves; including the analysis of both adjudicated and pre-adjudicated claim data
  • Provide medical claim data, interpretation and guidance to claim reserving team in regards to appropriate considerations in setting claims reserves
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., Finance, Claims Operations) as necessary to understand how operational changes impact and/or materialize in emerging claims data used for reserving analysis
  • Related medical cost analytics work as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in a healthcare economics, actuarial, or similar role
  • Proficiency in programming languages SQL, R, and/or Python
  • Experience with establishing and managing on-premises and cloud database connections (i.e. Teradata, Snowflake) supporting big data processing
  • Ability to manage work and deliverables with strict adherence to the timelines associated with the monthly financial close process
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly, concisely, and persuasively; establish credibility and ability to build effective cross-functional relationships
  • Ability to think strategically, and effectively drive results in a dynamic organization
  • Ability to maintain solid analytic data controls to ensure alignment with medical claims data used for claims reserving

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Actuarial credentials (ASA or FSA), or active pursuit toward credentials
  • 2+ years of medical claims reserving experience, or familiarity with basic medical claims reserving methodologies
  • Proficiency in business intelligence software (i.e. Tableau, Power BI) for data visualization, dashboard creation, and generating actionable insights
  • Experience with integrated development environments (i.e. VSCode, RStudio) and analytics platforms (i.e. Databricks, Jupyter Notebooks) for coding, debugging, data analysis, and big data processing

The salary range for this role is $124,500 to $239,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
