The Global Actuarial Solutions team within Liberty Mutual’s Global Risk Solutions (GRS) business is seeking an influential, collaborative, and highly motivated individual to work alongside our Underwriting Planning, Portfolio, & Performance (UWPPP) peers to support the evolution of our ceded reinsurance strategy. This is a new role where the successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of reinsurance contract structures and their suitability for achieving specific portfolio objectives. They should be able to assess risk and return implications of different reinsurance strategies over the life of the treaty and have familiarity with the financial and risk implications of various reinsurance solutions. Effective communication skills are essential, as the candidate will need to effectively convey and demonstrate the implications of reinsurance solutions and modeling work to business stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are crucial for supporting the gathering, cleansing, and sharing of data both internally and externally. The candidate should have experience in coordinating efforts across multiple teams within an insurance organization. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines while maintaining a high level of organizational and technical excellence is important for collaborating on the placements. Lastly, the candidate should be able to leverage submission data and model results to fairly allocate reinsurance costs and assist in the communication and dissemination of the agreed-upon allocations with the UWPPP team.
If the selected candidate lives within 50 miles of a GRS office, then the selected candidate must come into the office two days/week. This policy is subject to change.
There is a strong preference for the selected candidate to live within a commutable distance to our Boston, MA or Stamford, CT offices, but we will consider remote employees.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the UWPPP team to deliver exceptional external reinsurance support to the GRS organization
- Contribute to the development of reinsurance strategies, bridging the gap between gross plans and net target portfolio positions
- Assist in the identification of opportunities for reinsurance optimization to improve the risk and return of the UW portfolio
- Collaborate across GRS to assess the financial, risk, and capital implications of alternative reinsurance strategies
- Support the process of preparing and sharing submission data to internal stakeholders and external brokers
- Participate in conversations with internal stakeholders, business leaders, and broker representatives
- Understand and communicate the strengths and weaknesses of data and modeling methodologies and assumptions
- Manage the process to internally allocate reinsurance costs in a fair and reasonable manner using submission data and model results
- Assist in the communication and dissemination of agreed-upon allocations
- Support other efforts within the Global Actuarial Solutions team to inform an efficient target UW portfolio
- Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Associateship or Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS/FCAS) or comparable education/designation with relevant experience.
- Minimum 5-7 years relevant experience required.
- Sound knowledge of actuarial techniques and standards, as well as other business operations including financial, underwriting, legal, statistics, claims, sales, etc.
- Advanced communication and interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships and interact effectively with others within and outside the organization.
- Ability to motivate and mentor peers and motivate and train subordinates.
- Advanced computing skills (MS Office Excel, SAS, etc.) with ability to build complex models.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of reinsurance contract structures and their suitability for portfolio objectives
- Knowledge of the actuarial, financial, and accounting implications of various reinsurance solutions
- Familiarity with risk or capital modeling and the associated concepts of volatility and correlation
- Experience managing data from a variety of sources: claims, actuarial, financial, policy, etc
