AVP Actuary – Actuarial Transformation

Job Summary

The Head of Actuarial Transformation will play a key leadership role in furthering The Standard in their innovation journey and operational transformation. This leader will drive execution on a future state vision for the company’s actuarial work, talent, processes, systems and outcomes.  Critical to success will be the ability to communicate and collaborate with key stakeholders, lead and develop a team of leaders, and strategically allocate resources. The successful candidate must be a creative thinker able to inspire others with the compelling case for change and articulation of the future.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Spearhead the direction of the enterprise-wide actuarial transformation program and initiatives to optimize strategic insight and business impact.

  • Articulate a clear vision to continue to elevate and prioritize actuarial transformation across the organization.

  • Create an optimal business plan to execute on near-, mid-, and long-term actuarial transformation, enabling nimbleness throughout the actuarial organization.

  • Articulate the vision for what the successful end and impact of the transformation looks like, and drive a roadmap on how to get there.  Instill a sense of urgency and focus to achieve timely transformation that advances The Standard’s current strategic plan. 

  • Lead efforts to identify, analyze, and improve existing actuarial processes to meet organizational goals such as reducing costs, reworks, and time spent on low-value work.  

  • Develop strong, trust-based relationships and serve as a thought partner to each business unit and IT leaders and work in conjunction with their leaders to ideate efficient processes regarding pricing, valuation, modeling, forecasting, and product design.

  • Lead, develop, and empower a team of actuarial transformation leaders across strategy, technology, transformation, program management, and technology functions.

  • Engage business and functional partners to gain buy-in for transformation investment and change initiatives.

  • Serve as a visible liaison across a diverse set of stakeholders, effectively communicating and distilling information for different audiences.  

  • Inspire, lead, and empower leaders to develop talent and navigate actuarial teams through change. 

  • Lead the Actuarial Transformation organization and capabilities with a business-driven P&L mentality, effectively managing resources and investments within target financial and budget parameters.

  • Maintain and reinforce a disciplined culture of risk management and serve as the first line of defense for risk minimization.

  • Develop and grow the existing bench of talent to serve as strong, innovative minds and leaders. 

  • Coordinate the development of actuarial data strategy at the enterprise level and ensure all data assets and data management capabilities are available on the enterprise platform.

Experience and Education

  • 10+ years in actuarial (or actuarial adjacent) roles; 7 years in leadership/managerial positions.

  • Strong understanding of the insurance industry, business, regulatory environment, competitors, market cycle, technology, and legislative trends affecting insurance practices.

  • Extensive track record of building out new capabilities, leading high-performing teams, and using data for their decision making.

  • Deep understanding of emerging technologies, data strategy, Agile, technology modernization, and highly innovative processes. Ability to articulate business use cases for transformations.

  • Proven organizational leadership skills with an emphasis on transformation and change management

  • Experience in multiple business lines preferred.

  • Experience presenting to executive leadership and board of directors audiences. Proven ability to communicate transformational strategies to non-transformation employees.

  • Bachelors degree required; advance degree preferred

  • FSA or ASA preferred - Though not required. A background in FP&A is also suitable.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

 

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

$199,750.00 - $333,750.00
