Job Description Summary

Working closely with business leaders throughout Nationwide's Property & Casualty (P&C) organization, we provide the data and expertise they need for appropriate reserving. As an AVP, you'll lead the Reserving function for a significant and complex business unit, including special assignments and projects often involving complex analyses using sound actuarial techniques and judgment. You'll also train and approve the work of others while acting as a representative of the department in a variety of situations with all levels of internal and external audiences. You'll serve as a key business partner with Pricing, Claims, Underwriting and Finance to discern trends and drive business outcomes, which may include partnering with pricing actuaries and finance to assess current and future performance and ensure that appropriate rate levels are achieved and financial forecasts are appropriate. We'll count on you to also identify, evaluate, and document new techniques, methodologies and software to support analysis efforts.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Delivers clear, actionable, and tailored communications and presentations to share insights and drive business outcomes for use with senior management and other key business partners.
- Leads a team responsible for the management of Reserving for a significant and complex business unit. Ensures team and individual work product quality via appropriate peer/tech reviews.
- Evaluates current methodologies and alternative actuarial methods for use. Develops methods to deal with new situations, adhering to CAS standards of practice. Resolves unreasonable results and non-optimal solutions using experience and professional judgment.
- Trains staff, defines training requirements, and oversees training by others. Performs all activities related to hiring and supervision of staff, which may include multiple units. Addresses employee concerns and remains aware of the performance levels for all indirect reports.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to VP, Actuarial Reserving - P&C. Leads a team of 4 or more associates.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or related field with a strong quantitative orientation preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Membership in the Casualty Actuarial Society (typically Fellowship).
Experience: Typically, ten or more years of experience in an actuarial function with five years of managerial experience.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Mastery of actuarial techniques and insurance operations, laws and regulations. In-depth knowledge regarding leadership skills, strategy development and execution. Outstanding oral/written communication skills. Proven ability to handle complex tasks/projects, manage people and functional area. Effective group presentation skills. Computer/software skills appropriate for the position.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. The national salary range for AVP, Actuarial Reserving - Property & Casualty : $140,000.00-$277,000.00
The expected starting salary range for AVP, Actuarial Reserving - Property & Casualty : $147,000.00 - $247,000.00
