Summary

Assistant Professor of Actuarial Science (full-time, 9-month, tenure-track) in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Start date is August 2025.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is located within the College of Arts and Sciences. The vision for our College, aligned with the university's strategic plan, is to ensure that our students graduate career-ready to meet the world's challenges, and that our faculty research and creative activity contribute to the public good. We achieve this through robust collaboration across departmental boundaries, with particular attention given to increasing experiential learning for our undergraduate and graduate students and connecting our scholarly and creative work to the needs of our region. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates who can contribute excellence in teaching, scholarly/creative work, and/or service toward achieving inclusive excellence throughout the university and to the greater community. Information about Program and College
The Department enjoys a nationally ranked doctoral program that offers a full range of graduate programs including two doctoral degree programs (PhD in Mathematics and PhD in Statistics) and undergraduate major specializations in actuarial science, statistics, data science, pure math, and applied math. Actuarial science is the largest of the undergraduate specializations, and many graduate students take graduate-level courses in actuarial science. In addition, the Department participates in the recently established interdisciplinary PhD and MS programs in Data Science. The Department has 27 full-time faculty members, more than 70 graduate students and about 100 undergraduate majors. The faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, research and service. Essential Functions

  • Teach courses in Actuarial Science and other courses in Statistics, Mathematics, Risk Management, or Insurance.
  • Establish and maintain a robust research agenda, leading to publications in premier Actuarial Science, Risk Management, and Insurance journals.
  • Assist with developing the Actuarial Science program into a Center of Actuary Excellence by recruiting and advising students, supervising co-curricular activities, and enhancing curricula.
  • Supervise student research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Collaborate with the Insurance and Risk Management program in the Schmidthorst College of Business.
  • Provide service to the department, university, and profession through active participation in committees and professional organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics or a related field (e.g., Risk Management, Applied Statistics). ABD candidates are eligible to apply but must complete all doctoral degree requirements by the start date (August 2025).
  • College-level teaching experience as a teaching assistant or instructor.
  • Demonstrated scholarly work (viz., peer-reviewed journal publications, conference presentations, or dissertation work) in Actuarial Science, Risk Management, or a related area (e.g., Risk Analysis, Risk and Insurance).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Progress toward or attainment of professional actuarial credentials (e.g., ASA, ACAS, FSA, or FCAS).
  • Experience as an instructor of record for Actuarial Science courses.
  • Peer-reviewed publications in Actuarial Science, Risk Management, or a related area (e.g., Risk Analysis, Risk and Insurance).
  • Experience seeking external research funding.
