The Appointed Actuary is responsible for opining on the adequacy and appropriateness of statutory reserves.  This process includes directing the performance of cash flow testing and other asset adequacy testing methods and providing oversight to quarterly and annual statutory reserve reporting.  The Appointed Actuary also provides leadership to the governance processes supporting actuarial balances and is responsible for representing actuarial matters with various state regulators.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Perform duties of Appointed Actuary

  • Direct a team in performing the annual asset adequacy testing process

  • File actuarial opinions, memorandums and additional certifications with state regulators

  • Present Appointed Actuary report to Audit Committee of Board

  • Provide oversight and review of quarterly statutory actuarial balances

Represent actuarial matters with state regulators

  • Respond to regulator inquiries on actuarial matters, including participation in formal examinations

  • Provide oversight to state data call submissions

  • Obtain state regulatory approval of change in statutory reserve basis and permitted practice

  • Partner with Qualified Actuary on Principle Based Reserves (PBR) report submission and state regulator reviews

Advance actuarial governance and standards of practice

  • Serve on actuarial governance group(s) to provide oversight in accordance with our Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) policies and framework

  • Oversee governance of assumption-setting for valuation

  • Monitor valuation standards and guidelines and ensure enterprise compliance

Consult on significant financial proposals or developments

  • Represent statutory actuarial matters in potential M&A transactions

  • Direct the setting of appropriate annual capital market assumptions for actuarial valuation

Qualifications:

  • FSA designation, MAAA designation

  • Meet the American Academy of Actuaries qualification standards for issuing statements of actuarial opinion

  • Thorough understanding of financial reporting, reserves, and capital

  • Excellent communication skills to communicate with state regulators, Audit Committee of the Board, senior management, home office associates

  • Decision-making skills and ability to act independently

If you’re in a commutable distance (90 minutes) you’ll join us 2-3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules. When working in our offices at least two days per week isn’t feasible (vacations, illness, travel, etc.), an eight day per month standard is an option.

Physical Job Requirements

  • Ability to utilize keyboard, mouse and computer for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
  • Ability to utilize telephone for 2-4 hours per day
  • Ability to perform simple grasping including handwriting, paper manipulation, sorting, folding, etc. periodically throughout entire workday
