About the role - What you need to know
Key duties:
Deputising to the Head of Value Management and Research, you will lead projects, assumption setting and experience analyses. This will include:
Being responsible for the monitoring and reporting of ongoing experience. Providing insight from historic experience and other research to help optimise underwriting and claims practices, pricing and reinsurance terms and structures.
Being responsible for the development, review and update of individual and/or group protection best estimate assumptions for sign-off by the Board, using emerging experience and industry data and research. Reviewing expected financial impacts from assumption changes.
Ensuring robust and scalable processes are developed for ongoing analysis. Suggesting improvements for current processes and new ideas.
Reviewing pricing proposals and leading experience analysis for large group schemes.
Being the Research Team’s key point of contact for the individual business’ Distribution Quality Management (DQM) work; representing the Research Team on the DQM Committee and with reinsurers. Leading the analysis and working closely with other key representatives from across the business to improve distribution quality and hence improve expected future experience and reinsurance terms.
Producing papers and presenting results and proposals to internal committees including Pricing Steering Committees, Distribution Quality Management Committees, Technical Steering Committees and the Board.
Line-managing 2+ direct reports. Supporting and developing junior team members.
Supporting business-wide projects.
What we’re looking for:
Qualified actuary with 5+ years of post-qualified experience and a 2:1 or higher degree
5+ years direct experience with either individual or group protection is essential.
Prior experience of carrying out experience investigations and setting bases for protection business is essential.
Prior knowledge of Distributor Quality Management is desirable.
Good knowledge of the UK individual and group protection market (competitors, distribution, products, new business processes including underwriting, reinsurance structures, pricing approaches and profit measures).
Some knowledge of cash flow modelling and pricing and reporting metrics including Solvency II, MCEV, UK GAAP, IFRS and US GAAP.

Ability to manage own workload and effectively prioritise and use pragmatism where necessary to ensure deadlines are met
Excellent communication skills – verbal and written reports for Board-level stakeholders
Collaborative team work
Good attention to detail and use of quality assurance
Excellent Excel and VBA skills, experience of SQL and use of model office software (e.g. Mo.Net, Moses, VIP, Prophet).

Together we form a close tight knit team that collaborate together to achieve as a team.
The Research team is part of the Actuarial Team which also covers Value Management, Systems, Financial Reporting and Capital Management & ALM. We also work closely with other teams such as Pricing, Reinsurance, Underwriting, Claims and Sales. There is considerable opportunity for contact with other areas of the business, exposure to Senior Management, Directors and US stakeholders. The Senior Research Actuary attends the Technical Steering Committee, chaired by the Chief Financial Officer, and Distribution Quality Management Committee, chaired by the Chief Executive Officer.
