Job Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide advanced actuarial analyses, based upon generally accepted actuarial principles, and to provide direction and oversight of more junior level actuaries. The completed analyses will be used by internal business leaders for data-based decision making. These analyses may relate to various areas of actuarial expertise, including: Pricing, Reserving, Reinsurance, Corporate Reporting, or combinations of these areas. At this level, solid communication skills are essential.Job responsibilities will include a combination of some of the below items, subject to the needs of our collaborators:
Forecasting reserve estimates on a quarterly basis
- Presenting quarterly results to Finance, Claims, Underwriting, and executive leadership
- Periodic pricing studies
- Large account pricing
- Utilizing predictive analytics to identify most and least profitable insureds within a portfolio
- Rate change monitoring
- Developing action monitors to track progress toward stated goals to improve profitability
- Researching new business opportunities and identifying potential acquisitions
- Ad hoc requests from product line leaders and executive leadership
- Leading or overseeing more junior actuaries in projects related to the above
- Other actuarial work as needed
Work Experience:
- 5+ years of relevant actuarial experience
- ACAS or higher
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Excellent analytical ability
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong computer skills, particularly in Excel
- Experience using R, Visual Basic, or SQL preferred
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science or related field
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors.
Please note: Markel's phased approach for re-entry into our buildings is designed to balance the ongoing health, safety, and well-being of our employees with operational considerations and regulatory/governmental requirements and recommendations. As a result, we implemented a hybrid return to work strategy that allows for three days in the office every week.
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors.
