Position Description

The position is integral part of the team supporting The Hartford’s $1.8+ Billion Business Owners Policy (Spectrum) line of business.  These products include Property, Liability, and Umbrella coverages.

The position will be part of a team responsible for understanding the performance of Spectrum class plans and using this information to inform future decisions on the line. Our Spectrum product is nuanced and changes quickly, and we need to understand the effectiveness of our changes to position ourselves for continuous improvement. The candidate is expected to collaborate with multiple business partners to drive profitability and influence quality business decisions.

** Please note, candidates pursuing exams as well as those not pursuing exams will be considered for this role. This role can be part of our Actuarial Student Program for an individual meeting requirements for entry into the program. The Actuarial Student Program provides ample study time, exam increases, structured rotations along with a large collaborative fun community of other students.

Responsibilities

  • Become a subject matter expert regarding available Spectrum data and participate on upcoming projects including class plan development and enhancing pricing segmentation using internal and external data.
  • Become a subject matter expert on Spectrum ratemaking. This includes supporting the development, enhancements, and maintenance of many actuarial topics including:  loss development, trend, capping, and credibility.
  • Be willing to learn and utilize advanced analytic skills like R coding and predictive modeling. The Spectrum team is an innovative team that uses advanced analytics and predictive modeling throughout all stages of the actuarial life cycle including monitoring, rate indications and loss ratio projections. You will be part of a collaborative team that is encouraged to innovate and use advanced techniques to provide deeper insights to our business partners.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in insurance or related industry.   FCAS, ACAS, or masters level statistical education a plus.
  • Very strong technical, analytical and data skills; Excel experience required and experience with SQL, R and/or Python a plus.
  • Experience using statistical models and/or machine learning approaches preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds. 
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with thorough attention to detail. Ability to own projects and anticipate obstacles and customer needs.
  • Experience working independently as well as part of a team
  • Proactive individual, who challenges existing processes, can influence others, and can drive a process to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities. 
  • Process improvement mindset and skilled at developing efficiencies.
  • Experience building successful business partnerships

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$80,000 - $140,000
