Position Overview:

As an Actuarial Technical Specialist, you'll gain a thorough knowledge of the Actuarial - Reserving function across our P&C Products. We'll count on you to complete a wide variety of assignments related to actuarial data and some actuarial and/or financial analysis/reporting.

In this role, you will play a critical role in our Reserving Transformation. You will help drive our Data Modernization -- consumption and structuring of loss reserving data to further the Reserving Department's Actuarial analytics through the improvement of our data, capabilities, and tools. The P&C Reserving department has signed an agreement with Akur8 to utilize their Reserving platform (Arius) to enhance our capabilities. You will support the team in assessing/understanding our current data assets and transmitting those into Arius to produce reliable reserve estimates.

You will also support the P&C Reserving Leadership team by assisting in producing views that help tell the Quarterly Reserving outcomes to senior leadership. This role will offer the capability to enhance how we are currently receiving reserving output from the separate line of business teams and seeking ways to drive consistency and improve messaging. In this role, you will also provide support for the Statement of Actuarial Opinion, provide information to auditors, and produce actuarial/financial ad hoc projects.

This will be an exciting role as the P&C senior leadership team is strongly supporting this transformation. Through the understanding of data flows, supporting the architectural needs, and assisting in actuarial/financial products that span all the lines, you have the opportunity to significantly increase your P&C knowledge base, which may lead to more opportunities.

You will be supported by a strong team of actuarial, insurance, and data professionals.

Successful candidate attributes:
  • Strong data mindset. Enjoys understanding connectivity of different data sources and how they can come together to produce business analytics tools.
  • Strong financial mindset - understands or has a strong desire to understand the Loss and LAE financials of the P&C organization
  • Proficient in PowerBI and PowerPoint
  • Proficient in writing code in SQL, Python, or R
  • Familiar with Databricks environment
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail and extraordinary care in ensuring accuracy of data/deliverables.
  • Able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

This role will be staffed an the internal F3 pay band. This position will be working a hybrid schedule with 2 days in an office location preferably Columbus, OH or Des Moines, IA.

As a Technical Consultant, you'll be an actuarial technical expert for planning, driving, communicating and executing projects that may impact multiple lines of business and/or administrative areas. Additionally, you will provide expertise, including consultation and recommendations, for ratemaking or reserving purposes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Has in depth knowledge of actuarial methodologies the ability to source and manipulate complex data within standard requirements.
  • Conducts complex analyses, adhering to actuarial standards, by selecting appropriate data sources, making assumptions, recognizing considerations and developing recommendations. Accountable for resolving unreasonable results/non-optimal solutions using experience and professional judgment.
  • Documents assumptions, methods, sources, and considerations in an organized fashion
  • Prepares and presents actuarial support findings and documents that are suitable for technical and non-technical audiences at the Senior Actuarial leadership level. May professionally represent company's position with regulators, auditors, and external vendors
  • Develops work plans and ensures accurate work product is delivered.
  • Leads peer reviews to increase collaboration, ensure quality work and drive innovation.
  • Maintains relationship with business customers as well as builds new relationships.
  • Leads onboarding and training for new associates on standard work processes.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Actuarial leader

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or similar background requiring modeling, programming or quantitative analysis

Experience: Generally, five years related experience in actuarial and statistical support role.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: General knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, actuarial models, actuarial software and databases. Proficient in Microsoft Office products, analytical software, and programming languages. Should have basic competencies including business understanding, problem solving, customer focus, dealing with ambiguity, drive for results and learning ability.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and HR Business Partner.
