Overview of the Position
This is a key role that supports the Bond and Cross Lines team within the Actuarial Reserving Department. This role can be a strong individual contributor role or a developing manager role with responsibility for the completion of reserve studies, statutory requirements, and maintaining and enhancing quarterly processes that aggregate reserves across all P&C lines. This role will gain insights into reserving processes and analysis across all P&C lines and has high visibility to management. In addition, this position will require establishing relationships with management, and stakeholders in actuarial, claims, business segment, underwriting, and finance. This role will also provide support to innovate and advance our key reserving initiatives.
Location:
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
** Please note, candidates pursuing exams as well as those not pursuing exams will be considered for this role. This role can be part of our Actuarial Student Program for an individual meeting requirements for entry into the program. **
Responsibilities
- Prepare and assist in communicating the results of reserve analyses, including:
- Providing insight and commentary for drivers of monthly Actual versus Expected monitoring
- Partnering with the Claims and Actuarial Pricing team to closely monitor trends and emerging risks and communicating the reserve impact to stakeholders
- Guiding the Actuarial Pricing team in making their prospective ULAE selections within the planning process
- Preparing related support for the Actuarial Report
- Thinking creatively to develop innovative solutions to actuarial processes and how we can enhance long-standing actuarial methodology using more contemporary techniques
- Provide reserving support across the department to all P&C lines, including:
- Coordinating quarterly timelines and deliverables by considering key milestones and communicating those to the department
- Developing subject matter expertise of the department-wide reserving process by maintaining and enhancing files that aggregate all lines for meetings with the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors
- Working closely with the Cross Lines Director and AVP to prepare summary materials for the Chief Reserving Actuary & Reserving AVPs in preparation for key meetings with the Executive Leadership Team
- Propose and implement efficiencies on the team with a focus on reducing complexity and increasing accuracy to produce high-quality, timely work.
- Provide support for key reserving initiatives including the TM1 Reserving Database.
Experience & Skills
- Individuals with 3-7+ years of actuarial experience; past or current experience in reserving preferred, but not necessary. Eligible for actuarial exam support for candidate meeting entry requirements for our actuarial student program.
- Strong technical and analytical skills; advanced knowledge of excel; experience in ResQ, TM1, R, and SQL preferred.
- Self-motivated and proactive candidate with the ability to manage time effectively by prioritizing in an environment with multiple responsibilities.
- Solid teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate with individuals in various functions at different organizational levels.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
80,000 - 150,000The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
