Position Summary

From ideation through implementation, the Actuarial Senior Consultant in this role will be a lead within the individual life insurance product development process. As a subject matter expert on individual life insurance products, the product development process, and the teams with which we work, the Actuarial Senior Consultant will participate in product ideation, influence and drive to decisions on product design, and be a partner for the product pricing team throughout the development process while collaborating with the product development teams to ensure a successful launch.

This position is part of the Actuarial exam-taking path. At Securian Financial the internal title for this position is Actuarial Consultant or Actuarial Sr Consultant. The title and salary will be determined based on experience and exam progress.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Lead individual life insurance product development initiatives
  • Use expertise of the product development process to identify impacted teams, develop timelines, escalate risks, and oversee progress to drive a successful launch.
  • Develop relationships with leaders of the actuarial pricing, competitive intelligence, illustration, new business, administration, marketing, and legal teams involved in the product development process.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement within the product development process to champion best practices for communication, collaboration, and planning.


Influence product ideation and design
  • Identify ideas for future product development initiatives as a member of the Core Life Ideation Workstream.
  • Lead development of initial assessments and business cases for ideas generated within the workstream.
  • Gather input from teams to influence product design seeking a balance of market competitiveness and internal complexity resulting in a recommendation for the Director of Life Product Development.


Create a culture of collaboration and teamwork with the pricing team
  • Build relationships with the Life Pricing Actuarial Manager and Actuarial Students on the pricing team.
  • Lead weekly collaboration meetings with the pricing team to maintain open communication on upcoming initiatives.


Guide the project manager providing guidance, background, coaching, and onboarding to maintain consistency and effectiveness within the product development process.

Qualifications:
  • Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries (or ability to obtain)
  • 3+ years of product development experience
  • Written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact with management, actuarial, ET, underwriting and distribution associates.
  • Understanding of implications and appropriate balance between market competitive position, regulatory constraints, system capabilities, profitability, and risk appetite.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to interact with wide variety of people that is demanded by the job.
  • Strong decision-making skills to balance competing interests
  • Knowledge (or ability to learn) internal systems necessary for product development launch

If you're in a commutable distance (90 minutes) you'll join us 2-3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules. When working in our offices at least two days per week isn't feasible (vacations, illness, travel, etc.), an eight day per month standard is an option.

Physical Job Requirements:
