The Department of Health Economics is seeking an Actuarial Intern for Summer 2025! The actuarial profession applies knowledge of mathematics, probability, and statistics in order to identify issues and analyze data on a wide variety of topics affecting the financial performance of UPMC Health Plan. This healthcare actuarial intern would help drive high-visibility impactful analysis supporting medical cost improvement strategies for UPMC Health Plan. This includes analyzing medical cost utilization and unit cost data, identifying top trend drivers and affordability opportunities, and evaluating program and initiative outcomes with support from analysts and credentialed actuaries within the department.
This position is eligible for fully remote work or a hybrid work arrangement for candidates based in Pittsburgh, PA.
Responsibilities:
- Work with actuaries to analyze emerging trends in spending and utilization using healthcare claims data.
- Apply analytical and statistical software tools to provide data-driven insights to senior actuarial team members.
- Creatively leverage a wide range of datasets to inform key analyses.
- Build an understanding of complex actuarial concepts, methods, and applications in a variety of situations.
- Communicate results of analyses to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborate with team members, including other healthcare actuaries, to ensure that work product meets the highest standards of quality.
- Provide analytical support for ad hoc data analyses.
Qualifications:
- Strong technical and analytical skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint)
- Some experience with SQL, R and/or SAS preferred
- Working towards an Actuarial Science degree or other related field in STEM
- At least 1 actuarial exam passed is strongly preferred
