Job Summary:

This position, Actuarial - Financial Specialist, is in the technical track of the Actuarial job family and is part of the Annuity Inforce Management team. This role does not require management experience, and will require a hands on approach to actuarial technology. Primary responsibilities of the role include the following:
  • Development of User interfaces, Calculators and productivity tools in support of Actuarial Modernization
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Actuarial technology governance for User Interfaces, Calculators and productivity tools. This will likely include performing code reviews and monitoring environments
  • Manage and execute day to day activity associated with existing Actuarial infrastructure including the SQL Server Database, Integration Services and Report Services environments
  • Prioritizing and executing Corporate Actuarial application development and enhancement efforts, which includes the use of current Actuarial technologies (ESP, VB.NET, SQL Server)
  • Ensuring Nationwide Information Risk Management and Data Governance standards are met


Job Requirements:
  • Motivated candidate with excellent technical skills and firm grasp of NF Actuarial functions
  • Experience writing code (VB, C#, C++ or related language preferred) is required
  • 3+ years SQL Server experience required
  • Candidates should demonstrate ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail required to execute Actuarial lead function
  • Strong analytical ability required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required


Preferred Skills:
  • Actuarial experience or completion of actuarial exams (making progress towards ACAS).
  • Experience with GGY AXIS or MG ALFA


This role can be staffed remotely and F3 is the internal pay band.

As a Technical Consultant, you'll be an actuarial technical specialist for planning, driving, communicating and executing projects that may impact multiple lines of business and/or administrative areas. Additionally, you will provide expertise, including consultation and recommendations, for ratemaking or valuation purposes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Compiles, categorizes and analyzes data.
  • Performs construction of sophisticated testing tools and analysis of product calculations.
  • Performs construction, maintenance and execution of actuarial, projection and valuation models.
  • Performs financial reporting and analysis.
  • Performs pricing and implementation of products.
  • Analyzes risks for lines of business.
  • Establishes reserves and other valuation items under multiple accounting regimes (statutory, GAAP and tax) for products.
  • Performs reinsurance analysis and pricing.
  • Develops effective communication strategies and recommendations to leadership and creates supporting documentation when requested.
  • Performs activities related to a specialized phase of data and analytics which may include data governance, data strategy development, data modeling, data requirements, data manipulation, and /or requirement elicitation.
  • Performs moderately sophisticated business processes; implements new programs and/or modifications of existing applications. Consults on cross-functional project teams.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Financial Director, Actuarial, or other financial/actuarial manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, computer science or similar background requiring modeling, programming or quantitative analysis.

Experience: Typically, four or more years of actuarial or relevant experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, company actuarial systems and databases and their integration, technical facility with leading computer tools and technology. Proficient in Microsoft Office products (including VBA within Access and Excel), programming languages and likely actuarial models. Basic level of command skills, strategic agility, delegation, motivating others, business perspective, and accounting. Proficient level of perspective, dealing with ambiguity, customer focus, drive for results, learning on the fly and analysis. Mastery level of problem solving and making the best use of system capabilities.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by Chief Actuary and Associate Vice President, Human Resources.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for Specialist, Financial - Actuarial : $69,000.00-$142,000.00

The expected starting salary range for Specialist, Financial - Actuarial : $76,500.00 - $114,500.00
