The Standard seeks a talented, experienced actuary to join our STD/PFML Pricing team in our Employee Benefits division. You will be heavily involved in pricing Paid Family Medical Leave products to support our company’s efforts in this rapidly growing product segment. The role will require skillful relationship management as we look to build, implement, and maintain a new pricing algorithm with a variety of key internal stakeholders. We are seeking a high level of detail orientation from a motivated, curious individual who wants to learn and grow within the organization.
Job Summary:
Acceptance to a position in this job family constitutes participation in the Actuarial Student Program at The Standard. The mission of the Actuarial Student Program is to grow actuarial knowledge, business acumen and leadership skills in our Actuaries to enable the achievement of organizational goals.
Actuarial students are expected to progress through the levels of the job family based on academic/exam achievements and by developing their analytical skills, independent decision making, and effective communication and leadership skills.
Below are typical functions of the actuarial job family. Actual responsibilities may vary based on the business line the position resides in, and the level of the position.
Pricing/Underwriting: Develop and maintain pricing for premium rates and fees. Analyze emerging profit as compared to pricing assumptions. Perform specialized pricing/underwriting for large cases or unique blocks of business.
Actuarial/Expected Experience Studies: Gather, analyze and develop strong understanding of profitability, growth, risk, customer retention, and expense trends utilizing company, industry and market data as necessary. Create and maintain pricing models used in income projection and loss ratio review. Communicate findings to management and provide quantitative knowledge for business/growth/risk management and general financial strategies.
Product Development: Collaborate with sales, marketing and other functional areas on the financial soundness and feasibility of new products. Research, design and implement new products or product enhancements. Analyze new product profitability to achieve corporate/division income and growth goals.
Data Analysis/Information Systems: Extract, analyze and prepare data for use in actuarial analysis. Analyze, interpret and present numerical data related to pricing and other actuarial analysis.
Cross Collaboration: Communicate and collaborate with various departments across the organization to meet business needs. Using data and analysis, provide strategic guidance in influencing management decision making.
Actuarial Exams: Prepare for and pass actuarial exams and maintain continuing education requirements.
Analytical Skills: Seasoned professional with strong actuarial and financial expertise. Able to apply knowledge/analytical skills to resolve problems of diverse scope which requires a review of a variety of quantitative and qualitative factors. Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways and demonstrates good judgment in selecting techniques for obtaining solutions.
Independence: Determines methods and procedures on new assignments with some guidance. Emerging skills as a mentor and resource to entry level actuaries. Anticipates customer needs and takes initiative to address business challenges.
Influence: Acts as a subject matter expert having frequent interaction with senior department managers or other senior actuarial personnel. Developing communication skills with non-technical audience.
Skills and Background You’ll Need:
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, actuarial science, business or a related field preferred.
- ASA designation required.
- Three or more years experience in the actuarial field

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.
Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.
Salary Range:
$92,250.00 - $135,250.00Positions will be posted for at least 5 days from original posting date.
