The AVP Actuary is responsible for management and direction of actuarial pricing and product support for Berkley Select. This includes the strategic actuarial leadership for a $200M+ portfolio that centers on Lawyers Professional and Executive Liability for the company.  This position is a key point of contact to Senior Management, internal business units (particularly Underwriting) and external parties. The position is well suited for an experienced ACAS or new FCAS.  Key functions include but are not limited to:

  • Participates with senior management team at the strategic level to execute goals.
  • Leads significant actuarial initiatives to grow a profitable business.
  • Engages business functions with knowledge and expertise to succeed as an organization and differentiate itself.
  • Works in an Actuarial team environment to support a growing appetite for more sophisticated analytics, strategic insights and practical business guidance to promote profitable growth.
  • Partners by supporting the business itself and Underwriting in particular by providing actuarial support for new products, rate filings, profitability analyses, key metrics, etc.
  • Reviews existing products/rate plans once a year with an eye toward: changing rates, rating formulas and/or factors; consolidate plans across legal entities or eliminate plans as appropriate. 
  • Creates innovative strategies for pricing and rating.
  • Supports compliance department in the submission of filings to state departments, helping to ensure their ultimate approval and implementation.
  • Provides support for the actuarial team in Reserving, quarterly Closing, Statutory accounting, and other Accounting/Finance needs.
  • Creates innovative strategies for Reserving, Reporting and support for Finance.
  • Could manage staff both directly as well as indirectly.
  • Advanced degree in mathematics, statistics or related professional discipline and a Member of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS or FCAS).
  • A minimum of 6 years of actuarial experience, preferably with a pricing background.
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate, influence and articulate complicated information that is understandable and fact based to non-technical staff.
  • Strong financial, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively resolve complex problems in a timely fashion.
  • Is capable of balancing multiple concurrent, high priority projects within time constraints allowed.
  • Can work in a highly dynamic culture that thrives on collaboration and teamwork across the enterprise.
  • Able to work independently and prioritize daily work priorities while bringing project to conclusion on time.
  • Project management skills, including leading teams of actuaries and non-actuaries.
